POPULAR LIBRARY
All of you must have been more than once to a library, those sanctuaries of knowledge where almost anything is possible. If you put your mind to it, through a book, you can travel as far as you want, be many characters, discover theories or proven facts, invented stories, there is everything in books.
This library was built in 1922 when the mayor of Pineda was Mr. Manuel Serra i Moret. It is in “Noucentista” style and in 1981 it was expanded and its original structure was also modified. Notice how beautiful the round arch is, there on the main façade, framed by two Ionic columns.
Now, let’s travel back in time. The urbanisation of spaces then occupied by fields and crops was very slow. Here, in front of you, there is Les Mèlies square, which was not defined until the 1940s, since between this library and Catalunya square, headquarters of Pineda town hall, there was only an immense open field. Can you imagine that?
It was only at the beginning of the 20th century when the town began to develop in urban, cultural and social terms. All this growth was caused by the pressure of many immigrants, that is, a considerable population increase.
The Popular Library is an architectural symbol of a period of growth in Pineda, it was a meeting point and a new face of the “Noucentista” culture and society of the time!
